Powder Brows 101: Everything you need to know before your appointment

The only guide you’ll need for perfectly soft, semi-permanent brows

Are you tired of spending precious minutes each morning drawing on your eyebrows, only to have them smudge, sweat off, or disappear entirely during the day?

Imagine waking up with perfect, natural-looking brows that frame your face and boost your confidence.

 Oh, hello powder brows!

In this 101 guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about powder brows: what they are, how they work, and why they’re the best thing for effortless beauty.

What are powder brows?

Powder brows are a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing technique designed to create soft, natural-looking eyebrows. Unlike microblading, which uses hair-like strokes, powder brows involve gently layering pigment into the skin for a powdered, gradient effect. This technique is perfect for anyone seeking a polished, natural look that doesn’t scream “tattooed brows.” Think of them as your go-to brows for every occasion, from casual mornings to glamorous nights.

 How are powder brows applied?

We use an advanced non-invasive machine technique with a single needle that disperses hundreds of micro dots of pigment into the skin, creating a 3-dimensional, soft and powdery shadow through the brow once healed.

Who should get powder brows?

  • Those with sparse or thinning brows: Whether due to age, menopause, illness, or genetics, powder brows can restore fullness and symmetry.
  • Busy women: Save time and skip the hassle of daily brow application.
  • Athletes & active lifestyles: Enjoy brows that stay put, no matter how much you sweat or swim.
  • Anyone seeking a youthful appearance: Properly shaped brows can lift your features (a “browtox” as we like to call it!) giving a refreshed, youthful look.

Who shouldn’t get powder brows?

While powder brows are a fantastic solution for achieving flawless, low-maintenance brows, they may not be suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions, medications, and skin issues can affect the safety and success of the treatment.

  • If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or undergoing active cancer treatment, you should wait until your health allows.
  • Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, blood disorders, or autoimmune diseases may require clearance from a doctor due to potential impacts on healing and longevity.
  • Medications like blood thinners, Accutaine or retinoids can interfere with the procedure, so these should be discussed with your technician.
  • Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or recent sunburn in the brow area may also temporarily delay the treatment.
  • If you’re prone to keloid scarring or have a known allergy to pigments or numbing agents, a consultation and patch test are highly recommended.
  • If you’re undergoing chemotherapy or other cancer treatment, please speak with us first.

Your safety and satisfaction are our priority, so we’ll ensure a thorough assessment to determine whether powder brows are the right choice for you. Just call us with any questions.

How do powder brows compare to microblading?

Choosing the right semi-permanent brow treatment can feel like a big decision. The two most popular choices are powder brows (our favourite) and microblading. Microblading and powder brows are both semi-permanent solutions for enhancing your brows, but they create very different looks.

The Overall Look – Powder brows vs microblading

Powder brows create a soft, powdered effect, resembling the look of brows lightly filled in with makeup. This technique results in a polished and natural appearance, perfect for those who prefer a seamless, gradient finish. In contrast, microblading mimics individual hair strokes, giving a more textured and defined look that suits those wanting to replicate natural brow hairs.

Technique and application

Powder brows involve gently layering pigment into the skin using a non-invasive shading method, making the process softer and less traumatic. This technique is ideal for those who want a uniform look across the brow. On the other hand, microblading uses a blade to make small, precise incisions in the skin, depositing pigment in a way that resembles hair strands. While effective, this approach can be harsher on the skin compared to powder brows.

Which lasts longer – powder brows or microblading?

Both powder brows and microblading last the same time frame depending on your lifestyle, health profile, skin type. Both require the same maintenance, but they can wear differently. Both will fade – powder brows fade out nicely whereas microblading brow strokes can blur and discolour.  Powder brows are easily refreshed however you can’t have repeated microblading. Some microblading can end in scarring which is there to stay. Most people end up covering the microblading with a powder.

Healing and Aftercare – Powder brows vs microblading

Healing with powder brows is minimal, with most clients experiencing light flaking and no scabbing. The process is gentle on the skin, ensuring a smooth recovery. Microblading, by contrast, often involves scabbing as the skin heals from the tiny cuts, which can prolong the recovery process and require more intensive aftercare.

Is microblading or powder brows better for my skin?

Powder brows are versatile and work beautifully on all skin types, including oily or sensitive skin. Microblading, while effective for many, can struggle to take on oily skin, leading to quicker fading or blurred strokes over time.

Each technique has its unique benefits, but powder brows stand out for their soft, natural finish, gentle application, and more predictable long-term results.

Whether you’re after a soft, filled-in look or prefer the distinct strokes of microblading, your choice should align with your skin type and personal style preferences.

What is the process for getting powder brows?

 1. Consultation

Your new brows begin with a detailed consultation. This is your opportunity to discuss what you want and your preferences. Together, we’ll determine the perfect brow shape and shade tailored to your unique facial features. We consider your skin type, age, lifestyle and anything else that might affect your treatment.

 2. The first session

At your first appointment, we meticulously map out your brows using precise measurements to ensure symmetry and alignment.

The initial session focuses on building the foundation for your new brows. We layer pigment into your skin using a gentle, non-invasive technique. The result is a natural, soft powder finish.

3. The second session

About 5-6 weeks later, we refine the look during a perfecting session. This is where we adjust the colour, enhance the density, and ensure your brows are just right.

 Precare for powder brows

Here are some tips on how to prepare to get your powder brow semi-permanent tattoos.

Don’t workout on the day of your appointment

Exercise increases blood circulation and sweat, which can interfere with the pigment retention which will affect your results. Staying cool and calm helps ensure the best results.

Don’t drink coffee or energy drinks before your appointment

Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and increases sensitivity, which might make the procedure less comfortable. Keeping your body relaxed is key to a smoother experience.

Don’t tweeze, wax or tint your eye brows one week before your appointment

We need to work with your natural brow shape to map the ideal design. Removing hair beforehand can disrupt this process or irritate the skin, which may affect the healing process.

Don’t have chemical peels, dermabrasion, or other facial treatments that may irritate the skin within 2 weeks prior to your appointment

These treatments can make your skin more sensitive and prone to irritation, which could slow healing and affect the overall success of the powder brow treatment.

Don’t have fillers, Botox, or other injectables 2 weeks prior to your appointment

Injectables can alter the shape or symmetry of your facial features temporarily. It’s important to allow them to settle so we can design your brows accurately based on your natural structure.

Please come to your appointment wearing your everyday makeup

Your usual makeup routine gives us valuable insight into your desired look, helping us create brows that suit your style and preferences.

Wash your hair before your appointment

Since you’ll need to avoid getting your brows wet during the healing process, it’s a good idea to arrive with freshly washed hair to keep things comfortable and convenient.

Wear comfortable clothes and stay hydrated

The procedure can take a couple of hours, so wearing comfortable clothes ensures you feel relaxed throughout. Staying hydrated supports your overall comfort and skin health, both of which contribute to a successful session.

Aftercare: Your guide to long-lasting brows

The better your aftercare, the better your results.

Some mild tenderness and irritation can be experienced in the first few days.

Your brows will appear darker and thicker the day after your tattoo – don’t panic, it will fade!

  • Lymph fluid will appear on the surface of your brow. For the first 12 hours only, gently dab your brow with a damp cotton pad every 3 hours using the sterile saline ampule supplied in your aftercare pack
  • Avoid exercise, sweating and steaming hot showers for the first seven days.
  • And avoid getting your brows wet for the first 5-7 days (that includes the shower, spa, sauna, pool or ocean – try using dry shampoo instead of washing your hair in the shower.
  • After your brow has flaked you can gently wash your face as normal and pat your brows dry with a clean face cloth.
  • Avoid touching your face and brows as much as possible.
  • Don’t apply makeup to the brow area until your brows are fully healed and don’t apply retinol or acidic products directly to your brow area.

Everyone heals differently – don’t expect a perfect result after your first session. Your brows will change daily throughout the healing time. It’s important to remember that powder brows are a two-step process and your second session is where the real magic happens!

Only after you’ve fully healed, 6 weeks after your second session, will you see the finished results.
